A Local Nature Reserve (LNR) on the edge of Ilkeston.

It comprises a section of the Nutbrook Canal, a pond, carr woodland and a superb species-rich meadow.

Barbecues are not permitted at any of our sites.

Resulting from old mining subsidence, this area now contains a mosaic of wetland habitats including alder carr woodland, hawthorn scrub, reedbeds, old canal, flowering meadows and open water where swans and wildfowl can be seen all year round. It's an important refuge for a great many plant and animal species.

In high summer there's a great variety of butterflies, dragonflies and other insects living in the grassland areas. These grasslands are being managed to maintain the variety of wildflowers and insects and to discourage encroaching scrub.

Pewit Carr is an important recreational site for local people. Visitors are welcome throughout the year.
