Over the next year (2026 to 2027 financial year), we'll be carrying out major improvements to the county's roads and pavements as part of our £41 million highways capital investment programme funded by the government and the East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA).

We'll also continue to invest an additional £16 million allocated in 2025/2026 from the East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA) for pothole repairs, landslips, retaining walls, Growth Zone programmes and the development of the Key Cycle Network.
In addition, we expect to receive further funding from the East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA) worth an extra £20 million in 2026.
The highways capital programme
Our 2026/2027 annual highways capital programme (attached to this page) was approved by our Cabinet in November 2025.
The annual capital highways programme document lists all major improvements, with roads and locations shown under the following headings:
- road resurfacing
- asphalt rejuvenation - a technique to restore the chemical properties of asphalt, improving its flexibility and resistance to cracking, reducing the chance of water damage and the formation of potholes
- surface dressing
- micro-asphalt
- pavement slurry seal surfacing
- pavement resurfacing
- pothole repair programme
- public rights of way improvements
- flooding and drainage improvements
- structures, including bridges and retaining walls
- landslips
- traffic and road safety improvements
- streetlights and pedestrian crossings
